Description
Geremias Wolff Geographical map of the Milan state, a beautiful early 18th-century aquatint on a copper plate by G. Bodenehr and published in Augsburg by Jeremias Wolff around 1720. On the left side of the green watercolor scroll, we find the words *Status Mediolanensis* in the principles of its parts, including some Venetian territories, as well as the Duchies of Mantua, Parma, and Modena. The map is in good condition, framed with a graduated scale; it has a slight yellowing along the central fold and is mounted on cardboard within a modern box frame with boxwood.
The Geremias Wolff map titled “Status Mediolanensis in principales suas partes divisas” is an important early 18th-century illustration depicting the territory of the Duchy of Milan. This work, published in Augsburg by Jeremias Wolff around 1720 and created by G. Bodenehr, is a significant example of cartography from that period.
The copperplate stands out for its artistic quality and detailed geographical layout, dividing various regions under Milanese control and indicating neighboring territories of the Venetian states as well as the Duchies of Mantua, Parma, and Modena. The presence of a green watercolor scroll on the left adds a touch of elegance and makes the sheet even more captivating.
Original antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing appreciation for high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of traditional and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, especially the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the Victorian English style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Original Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a strong resemblance and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The next style is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word *barocco*—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly ornate pieces designed to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture craftsmanship. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, with cornices, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards and broadly speaking, chest furniture. During this period, mythology and antiquity were also of interest, so supports and legs often took animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.
