Description

Saverio Manetti, wild duck, Cicalona, around 1770. A plate by Saverio Manetti depicting a wild duck, also known as Cicalona or male pochard, is an important illustration of 18th-century ornithology. Published as part of the work “Ornitologia methodica digesta atque iconibus atque iconibus aeneis ad vivum illuminatis ornata,” this piece is a testament not only to the richness of bird fauna but also to the scientific and artistic competence of its time.

The sheet size of 450 x 350 mm with wide margins allows full appreciation of the work, which is framed in a modern frame, enhancing its aesthetic value. The numbering of the plates with Roman numerals (DLXXIV) indicates its position within the publication, suggesting that the work consisted of many plates dedicated to different bird species.

The dedication to the financier, Count Pietro Verri Ciamberlano, highlights the importance of financial support for scientific and artistic projects of that era and reflects a network of social and cultural connections that supported such initiatives. The attention to detail in the illustrations and the quality of printing demonstrate Manetti’s rigorous and meticulous approach to depicting bird species.

This plate not only serves as a scientific document of ornithological classification but is also a work of art, representing an era when art and science were inseparably linked.

Original Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. Its origins are linked to Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a style heavily inspired by Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture is associated with the Louis XVI style, which also draws strongly from ancient architecture. Antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles are also interesting and noteworthy. Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly shaped pearl—was characterized by very ornate furniture designed to exude splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to further emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.

Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past. The Renaissance style is also significant, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries and leaving a substantial mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, with moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as in the construction of credenzas and broadly conceived chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times were also of interest, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common features in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture inspired by Italian and French craftsmen, as a sign of admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, giving each style a distinct character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique suitable for your interior.

The key aspect of vintage antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as many fakes circulate on the market. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the product’s authenticity and compliance with the description and photos.
