Description

Felice Zennaro, motherhood, early 1900s, Painted with black smoke on ceramic of an oval serving dish. The black smoke was then sealed with a fixer, and the painter masterfully rendered it onto the shutters. At the bottom, the inscription reads “made with smoke …… F. Zennaro “. In good condition, except for a few minor scratches.

Felice Zennaro, also known as Leppa, was born on October 8, 1833, in Pellestrina, Venice province. His first artistic training took place at the Venice Academy, where he likely met Natale Schiavoni, who by then had settled permanently in the lagoon city. Later, Zennaro studied in Milan at the Brera Academy, as a pupil of Giuseppe Bertini, with studies often interrupted to voluntarily fight in the wars of independence against Austria, as evidenced by patriotic paintings such as La Battaglia della Bezzecca. A work of effective dramatic interpretation (Milan, Museo del Risorgimento), in which the artist was wounded and left for dead. In 1865, he exhibited at the Brera Fine Arts Society a work titled Turca, purchased by the Society; in 1898, he was in Turin with the painting Ingenuità e buon cuore; two years later, he exhibited First Steps at the Milan exhibition of 19th-century Lombard painting. Even themes related to gender often refer to the Risorgimento epic or are connected to it. Moreover, his activity as a portraitist is notable, as evidenced by works such as Self-Portrait, Portrait of Count Francesco Annoni, and Portrait of Mrs. Cottini (Milan, Contemporary Art Gallery). He died in Milan on March 7, 1926. His works are housed in the Risorgimento Museum and in the portrait collection of Ospedale Maggiore in Milan.

Prestigious antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that have a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, dominated by the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally, the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles blend into pseudo styles of Classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.

Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. This style originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in the Rococo style and Louis XV. Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese ‘barocco’—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by very ornate, luxurious furniture designed to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.

Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, with cornices, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened up new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards and broadly speaking, chest furniture. Additionally, mythology and ancient times influenced the design, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion's paws, eagle's heads – these are common sights in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture crafted in this style, drawing inspiration from Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its own distinct character. This is especially important when searching for the perfect exclusive antique for your interior.

The most important aspect of prestigious antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial from the buyer's perspective, as the market is flooded with many forgeries.
