The Brain Pen, as this new creation by the Italian manufacturer is called, is the result of a long collaboration with the greatest authority in the field of intellect, Professor Restak, a author of over 20 books on the human brain. Montegrappa proudly presents a pen that is the outcome of one of the most ambitious projects in its distinguished history.  Among many positions he has held, mention should be made of professorship at George Washington University School of Medicine and residencies at Mount Sinai Hospital, Georgetown University Hospital, and George Washington University Hospital.

To create a pen that represents the complexity of the organ it is dedicated to, Montegrappa’s designers drew inspiration from the brain itself. The connection between the brain and the pen, which exists in the process and art of writing as an extension of human ability to express oneself through the use of the brain, prompted Montegrappa to illustrate this direct intellectual and physical connection. This special relationship is symbolically represented by the contrast between the basic elements of the pen’s construction, serving as a parallel to the human body: the cap is intricate and complex like the human organ of reason, while the body is simple, reflecting the human form.

The cross-section of the brain, based on an ancient illustration, adorns the top of the cap. Its cover depicts neural ganglia, while the clip is shaped like the spinal cord. The pen features a spring mechanism and the tip of the clip is lacquered in red or blue, distinguishing the fountain pen from the ballpoint pen. The nib of the fountain pen is engraved with a seahorse image, which refers to the hippocampus, a key component of the human brain and brains of other vertebrates. The hippocampus plays an important role in transferring information from short-term to long-term memory and in spatial orientation.
