Description
Art Deco-style Hanukkah lamp from the early 20th century Menora, Poland, circa 1920. Essential design and timeless elegance characterize this antique silver Jewish lamp, handcrafted with a rectangular base and two spherical supports connected to a square-section body in the shape of a half-moon. It features eight oil reservoirs and an original lamp inserted in the center.
Marked with the JS silver hallmark and the Polish silver mark on the base.
The lamp is in good condition, originating from a villa by Lake Maggiore, weighs 533 grams, and is in good shape except for a small dent on the edge of the candle holder and one on the edge of the base. The Hanukkah celebration commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Seleucid army. The victorious Maccabees wanted to rededicate the Jerusalem temple but found only a small vial that was supposed to last just one day, but miraculously lasted a week. Hanukkah symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness.
Luxurious antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, especially the Biedermeier style. Early in the century, this included antique neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the Victorian English style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, heavily inspired by Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Neoclassical furniture, such as Louis XVI style, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Notable and interesting are antique pieces in Rococo style and Louis XV. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco' meaning irregularly developed pearl, was characterized by highly ornate, luxurious furniture designed to dazzle with splendor and play a significant role in opulence. Selective use of materials was employed to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which often resembles the historical period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, moldings, strong bases, and reliefs. These pieces were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly conceived chest furniture. Mythology and classical themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws and eagle heads are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Many global brands now replicate such furniture, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production varied by country, giving each style a unique character. This is especially important when seeking exclusive antique pieces suited to your interior.
The key aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this matters most to buyers, as the market is flooded with counterfeits. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the authenticity of each item, matching the description and photos. We also have access to art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
