II Teatro La Fenice di Venezia - the legendary opera house in Venice, has been honored with a limited series of writing instruments by the renowned Italian company Montegrappa, which has been respected for over 100 years. The luxury fountain pens and ballpoint pens represent both aesthetic details that highlight this magnificent hall and the rich history it embodies.
Even the Italian name - for "the Phoenix" - carries historical significance. It refers to the saga involving three fires that destroyed La Fenice. Each time, the Venice community gathered to rebuild the opera, ensuring it would be a venue matching the greatest. The first opera house in Venice - San Benedetto Theatre - was razed by fire in 1774. Construction began in June 1790, based on plans by Gianantonio Selva, and was completed in May 1792. This was the moment when the opera was named "La Fenice," which, like the mythical Phoenix, rose from the ashes.
La Fenice quickly gained a reputation as the premier opera house, hosting major productions in the early 19th century by composers such as Rossini, Donizetti, and other leading figures performed by the world’s greatest voices. Two hundred plasterers, artists, carpenters, and other craftsmen were involved in restoring the atmosphere and style of the old theatre, evoking the 19th century. The grand reopening took place on December 14, 2003, marked by concerts featuring Beethoven, Wagner, and Stravinsky. The first opera performed in the "new" La Fenice was "La Traviata" in 2004.
Just as the architects working on the old and authentic image of La Fenice, Montegrappa designed handcrafted pens made from celluloid and precious metals, inspired by chandeliers, columns, and beautiful Rococo filigree that decorated every interior space. Although each pen in the series is naturally rare, engraved with an individual serial number to identify its origin, Montegrappa offers a range of personalization options. The flat end of the cap can be removed and decorated with the owner’s monogram, which can then be used as a wax seal to authenticate correspondence. Additionally, a small amount of wax has been matched to the color of the celluloid. The fountain pen comes in a box - Teatro La Fenice Sterling Montegrappa.
