Construction began in June 1790, based on plans by Gianantonio Selva, and was completed in May 1792. La Fenice quickly gained a reputation as the premier opera house, hosting major productions in the early 19th century by composers such as Rossini, Donizetti, and other leading figures performed by the world's top voices. Two hundred plasterers, artists, carpenters, and other craftsmen were involved in restoring the atmosphere and style of the old theatre, evoking the 19th century. The grand reopening took place on December 14, 2003, marked by concerts featuring Beethoven, Wagner, and Stravinsky. The first opera performed in the "new" La Fenice was "La Traviata" in 2004.
