The name "Cognac" was first used in 1617, and shortly thereafter, the first distillery was established, producing a stronger alcohol called burning wine (French: "vin brûle", in English "brandy"). Brandy produced around the town of Cognac was later called "eau-de-vie du Cognac" ("eau-de-vie" literally means: water of life in French). The process was also enhanced with a second distillation.
And the story of Credan SA?
