Description

Jacob de Gheyn's etching titled “The Armed with Halberd” from 1607 is an important example of late Mannerist engraving art. De Gheyn, one of the most influential engravers of his time, dedicated much of his career to depicting military themes, which were particularly relevant in 17th-century Europe, marked by conflicts and wars.

The print is part of the work “Wapenhandelinghe van Roers, Musquetten ende Spiessen,” a manual that not only contains instructions on the use of weapons but also serves as a historical document providing insights into the customs and lives of soldiers of that era. The engravings in the volume illustrate a wide range of military figures, with particular attention to details of uniforms and weapons, reflecting the evolution of tactical and military practices after the Union of Utrecht in 1579.

The central figure of the work, a soldier with a halberd, symbolizes not only authority and nobility but also the era in which innovative combat strategies and infantry organization, promoted by figures like Maurice of Nassau, transformed the battlefield landscape in Europe.

Preserved as an important element of military history and the evolution of weaponry techniques in the 17th century, De Gheyn’s works have become highly sought-after collectibles for historians, collectors, and art enthusiasts. The fact that they are available in large numbers and cover diverse topics allows for a deeper exploration of various aspects of military life of that period, making each print a small historical treasure.

The sheet measures mm. 360x260.

Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture belongs to the 19th century, during which the Biedermeier style was prevalent. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles transitioned into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, which emphasized Roman and Greek decorative motifs.

Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles are also interesting and noteworthy. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word barocco—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—refers to highly ornate furniture designed to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to further emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.

Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classic furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often finished with brown stains, featuring cornices, sturdy bases, and relief decorations. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards and broadly speaking, chest furniture. During this period, there was also an interest in mythology and antiquity, which influenced the forms of supports and legs, often taking animal shapes.

Lion's paws, eagle's heads – these are common sights in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture crafted in this style, drawing inspiration from Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that in each country, the perception of furniture manufacturing was different, so each style in a given nation had its own distinct character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.

The most important aspect of vintage antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial from the buyer's perspective, as the market is filled with many counterfeits. Luxury Products provides a certificate confirming the product's compliance with its actual description and photograph. We have appraisers, art experts, historians, and specialists from around the world at your disposal.
