Stylish antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Several key styles stand out among antique furniture. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Early in the century, this included neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe, and Victorian English styles. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from Napoleon’s reign. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly ornate, luxurious pieces designed to impress with their splendor and play a significant role in luxury interiors. Materials were carefully selected to emphasize the grandeur of these works.
Today, we can see how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which often closely resembles the historical period. The Renaissance style also had a significant impact, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries and leaving a lasting mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and relief carvings. These pieces were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were also popular, with supports and legs shaped like animals.
Lion paws and eagle heads are common features in Renaissance-style furniture. Many global brands now reproduce such furniture inspired by Italian and French craftsmen, reflecting admiration and respect for the history of beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture styles were perceived differently across countries, each with its unique character. This is especially crucial when searching for exclusive antique pieces suited to your interior.
The most important aspect of original antique furniture is authenticity. Ultimately, this matters most to buyers, as many forgeries circulate on the market. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the product’s authenticity and compliance with the description and photos. We also have access to art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
