An unusual rattan stool for the home - Kenneth Cobonpue

Kenneth Cobonpue is a multiple award-winning designer and manufacturer of luxury furniture from Cebu, Philippines. His transition into design began in 1987, studying industrial design at Pratt Institute in New York. During his studies, he completed leather and woodworking workshops in Florence, Italy. He then studied furniture marketing and production at Export-Akademie Baden-Württemberg in Reutlingen, Germany. All of this was part of private and government scholarship programs. Kenneth returned home to Cebu in 1996 to manage the project Interior Crafts of the Islands, Inc., a furniture design and manufacturing company founded by his mother Betty Cobonpue in 1972. Discovering that innovative design could have a new face using natural fibers and materials, Kenneth created functional art pieces that serve as an alternative to Western definitions of modern design. Today, KENNETH COBONPUE has become internationally renowned for groundbreaking designs and a rich client portfolio, including Hollywood stars and members of royal families.

Thanks to his masterful combination of nature, traditional craftsmanship, and innovative technologies, designer and creative director Kenneth Cobonpue has received international awards and recognition for his creative, eco-friendly, and distinctive works. Collaborating with some of the leading global designers, from local names to emerging talents, Kenneth started designing in the Philippines and shared his vision with a worldwide audience. 

Numerous awards and recognitions are his personal achievements

The five most significant awards include the Japan Good Design Award, the main prize at the Singapore International Design Competition, the Design for Asia Award in Hong Kong, the American Society of Decorators' Best Brand selection, and the French Coup de Coeur award. His projects have been featured in several editions of the International Design Yearbook published in London and New York. The book Phaidon titled "& WIDELEC" highlights Kenneth's position as a leader of a new movement integrating new technologies with craftsmanship. In 2007, TIME magazine named him "the first virtuoso of rattan." Kenneth was named Designer of the Year at the inaugural Maison et Objet Asia held in March 2014 in Singapore.
