Description
An illustration depicting the plans of the Milan city castle with a brief caption about subsequent additions to the original Rocca core. This is a card taken from the illustrated Cosmorama along with a detailed description. Cosmorama Pittorico is a magazine founded in Milan by Luigi Sacchi in 1835, which equipped it with a special typography and entrusted its management to his cousin Defendente Sacchi until his death in 1840. Distinguished Milanese (Carlo Tenca, Antonio Ghislanzoni, Alessandro Lampugnani) approached journalism, gaining initial experience with Pictorial Cosmorama, which had the advantage of being the first magazine where illustrations played an important role—a novelty that Carlo Cattaneo criticized, who was also a regular contributor. After about fifteen years, the publication began to lose interest and was replaced by more modern forms of journalism. It is in good condition.
Stylish antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that have a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, creation, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
There are many different styles characterizing antique furniture, but we can highlight a few of the most important. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, marked by the prevailing Biedermeier style. Its variants in the early years of this century include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles transitioned into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Everything originated from Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a significant resemblance and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Interesting and noteworthy are all antique products in Rococo style and Louis XV. Next is Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese *barocco*—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces designed to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to further emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past era. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture-making art. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and bulky, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These were quite distinctive products but also opened up new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets or broadly defined chest furniture. The Renaissance also drew inspiration from mythology and ancient times, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, taking inspiration from Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially crucial when searching for an exclusive antique suitable for your interior.
The most important aspect of elite antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial from the buyer’s perspective, as many forgeries circulate on the market.
