Description

"Remnants of Circus Maximus, which was named so due to its size, as it was larger than other circuses in Rome, and the aforementioned Circus was built solely for celebrating various kinds of games and hunts. Today, visible remains of the entire site can be seen, where people sat on the steps to watch the mentioned games, as shown on sign A. Sign B contained the prisons of sign C. There is an underground passage, a broken obelisk that was located in the middle of the aforementioned Circus D, and part of a lake, which currently serves to irrigate the garden running along E and the Aventine F, as well as the Palatine Hill." View from the series "Vestigi delle Antichità di Roma Tivoli Pozzuolo et altri luoghi," created by Sadeler based on the series by the Frenchman Stefano Du Pérac, using engraving and etching techniques, and in a smaller format on contemporary handmade paper. The work consists of 50 plates issued by Marco Sadeler in 1606 in Prague, a vibrant cultural center, under the same title "Vestigi delle Antichità di Roma" with the same descriptions as Du Pérac's work in Italian, without mentioning the inventor's name. Sadeler, the court engraver of Rudolf II, traveled to Germany and Italy, staying in Rome in 1593. However, his work also includes views of "...Tivoli, Pozzuolo, and other places," which are absent in Du Pérac's work (there are thirteen new plates), emphasizing the naturalistic aspect. The image is in perfect condition, with wide margins, framed in walnut.

This is one of the most important iconographic repertoires for travel enthusiasts of the Grand Tour.

Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that have a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture is from the 19th century, during which the Biedermeier style was dominant. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the Victorian English style. Toward the end of the century, these styles transitioned into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. Everything originated from Napoleon’s reign, which imposed significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Interesting and noteworthy are antique products in Rococo style and Louis XV. The next style is Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese "barocco" – meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to further emphasize the grandeur of these items.

Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture-making art. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These were quite distinctive products but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards or broadly defined chest furniture. They also drew inspiration from mythology and ancient times, with supports and legs taking animal forms.

Lion paws, eagle heads – these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique suitable for your interior.

The most important aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial from the buyer's perspective, as many counterfeits circulate on the market.
