Description
Unique pair of Italian, hand-carved caryatids, dated around 1500, nearly 210 cm tall, this antique pair of Renaissance sculptures with dark patina originates from a choir ensemble, used as a partition between market stalls. The two bas-relief figures have long hair, holding Ionic capitals on their heads. Drapery and scrolls connect the figures with a carved pilaster. In the central part, two different fruit compositions are carved in bas-relief.
The caryatids feature old, conservative restorations with minor updates consistent with their age of 1500, and are in good condition for their age, with a beautiful dark patina.
A caryatid is a female figure used as an architectural support, serving decorative functions such as a band, balustrade, balcony, or shelf. Caryatids were also widely used in furniture decoration, sometimes completely detached from load-bearing functions, solely for ornamental purposes.
Luxurious antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Several key styles stand out among antique furniture. Eclectic furniture mainly refers to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe, and the Victorian English style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from Napoleon’s reign. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative, opulent pieces designed to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Selective use of materials was employed to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, often using brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and relief carvings. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were also popular, with supports and legs taking animal forms.
Lion paws and eagle heads are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Many global brands now reproduce such pieces, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production varied by country, giving each style its unique character. This is especially crucial when searching for exclusive antique pieces suitable for your interior.
The most important aspect of original antique furniture is authenticity. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with many forgeries. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the product’s authenticity and correspondence with the description and photos. We also have access to art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
