Description
Set of four frames featuring 18th-century engravings by Klauber, housed in beautiful rectangular frames made of gilded wood with inlays of blue lapis lazuli-colored paper on the outer profile, decorated with gold embellishments.
Under the original glass are images of saints Ambrose, Gregory the Martyr, Augustine, and Geronimo, engraved by the German artist Katharina Klauber (1740-1813), belonging to a renowned family of engravers from Augusta, Germany, specializing in high-quality sacred art. Notably, the etchings depict:
1. S. Gregorius M. Conscripsit sermones rectissimos et veritate plenos. Preacher 12.10;
2. S. Ambrosius Sunt quaedam difficilia intellectu 2.Petr.3.16;
3. S. Augustinus Tria sunt difficilia mihi. Pov.30.18;
4. S. Hieronymus Columnae Coeli contremiscunt et pavent. Iob.26.11.
The engravings are bordered with a red line and a light blue mat. The items, consistent with their age, are in good condition with minimal signs of moisture.
Luxurious antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that possess a distinct character and soul. It is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own characteristic features.
Many styles distinguish antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe, and the Victorian English style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, inspired by Napoleon’s reign. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, such as Louis XVI style, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly ornate, luxurious furniture designed to dazzle with splendor and play a significant role in opulence. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which often mirrors the grandeur of the past. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, moldings, strong bases, and reliefs. These pieces were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and classical themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global companies reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture styles were perceived differently across countries, each with its own character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.
The key aspect of authentic antique furniture is its originality. Ultimately, this is crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with counterfeits.
