Description
Cirano Castelfranchi View of Naviglio di Via San Damiano Oil painting created in 1952 on poplar plywood depicts a view of old Milan. The Milanese landscape was painted with a confident and expressive brushstroke. The painting is in good condition, framed in a modern ivory lacquered frame with gilded corners. In the foreground, there is the romantic Ponte delle Sirenette bridge, still visible today in the heart of Sempione Park in Milan; built according to the design of architect Francesco Tettamanzzi between 1840–1842 by the Rubini-Scalini-Falck company; decorations were made by Benedetto Cacciatori based on plaster models; the bridge was commissioned by private individuals and was intended to be placed on the canal near Via San Damiano, today’s Via Uberto Visconti di Modrone.
On the parapets, there were two Latin inscriptions commemorating the construction of the first iron bridge in Milan in 1841 during the reign of Ferdinand I of Austria. Each of the pylons at the ends featured a mermaid holding an oar. Originally, the pillars were decorated with cast iron friezes, anchors, and swans holding garlands in the upper part, with lion heads at the bottom.
Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that possess a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, especially the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, emphasizing grandeur and referencing Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Neoclassical furniture, such as Louis XVI style, also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly ornate furniture designed to dazzle with splendor and luxury. Selectively used luxurious materials were employed to emphasize the opulence of these pieces.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French craftsmen. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, giving each style its unique character. This is especially crucial when searching for luxurious antiques suitable for your interior.
The key to stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is vital for buyers, as many counterfeit pieces circulate on the market.
