Description
Cirano Castelfranchi View of Naviglio di Via San Damiano Oil painting created in 1952 on poplar plywood depicting a view of old Milan. The Milanese landscape is painted with confident and expressive brushstrokes. The painting is in good condition, framed in a modern ivory lacquered frame with gilded corners. In the foreground, there is the romantic Ponte delle Sirenette bridge, still visible today in the heart of Sempione Park in Milan; built according to architect Francesco Tettamanzzi's design between 1840–1842 by Rubini-Scalini-Falck C Dongo; decorations by Benedetto Cacciatori based on plaster models; the bridge was commissioned by private individuals and was intended to be placed on the canal near Via San Damiano, now Via Uberto Visconti di Modrone.
On the parapets, there were two Latin inscriptions commemorating the construction of the first iron bridge in Milan in 1841 during the reign of Ferdinand I of Austria. Each of the pylons at the ends features a mermaid holding an oar. Originally, the pillars were decorated with cast iron friezes, anchors, and swans holding garlands in the upper part, with lion heads at the bottom.
Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that have a distinct character and soul. It is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, emphasizing grandeur and referencing Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, such as Louis XVI style, also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly ornate, luxurious furniture designed to impress with splendor. Materials were chosen selectively to emphasize the opulence of these pieces.
Today, we can see how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which often mirrors the grandeur of the past. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, moldings, strong bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as in the construction of cupboards and chest-type furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Many global brands today reproduce such pieces, inspired by Italian and French craftsmen, as a tribute to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that each country had its own approach to furniture making, giving each style a unique character. This is especially important when seeking luxurious antiques suited to a refined interior.
Originality is the most important aspect of vintage antique furniture. Ultimately, this matters most to buyers, as the market is flooded with fakes.
