In this breathtaking view of the Gulf of Naples, painter E. Ferrante was inspired by masters of the Posillipo school, including Antonio Pitloo and Giacinto Gigante, who used the "harbor" scene as a pretext to depict an idyllic landscape. The soft light of dawn or sunset envelops everything; the sea is calm, and the city seems to rest in the bay, under the watchful eye of a gentle volcano. In short, the Posillipo school is one of the highest moments of Italian Romanticism.
