Description
A pair of silver candelabras from the early 19th century in perfect condition, with embossed foil, a round base, and a stem decorated with leafy and geometric borders. Milanese piercers, silversmith Francesco Liverti.
This elegant pair of neoclassical silver candelabras bears at the base marks related to the second silver hallmark (800/000), a mark with seven trions referring to the Milan Guarantee Office between 1812-1872, and a silversmith FL referring to silversmith Francesco Liverti under the sign of the Cow on a round shield, documented until 1820 in Milan.
The mark from 1812-1872 clearly reproduces the cow symbol and is attributed to silversmith Francesco Liverti. However, no documentation confirming this has been found, and the mark does not appear among Milanese deposit marks or registrations. Nevertheless, it is very likely, as Liverti, born on August 14, 1765, to Ambrogio and Laura Reina, ran a shop from his home in the Bocchetto district at 2534. Francesco Liverti died in 1820, and his activity was continued by his widow until 1828. Thanks to this mark, numerous neoclassical cutlery pieces have been identified, all elegant and well crafted… G. Sambonet, Milan 1987, p. 303.
Elegant antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. It is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few of the most important can be distinguished. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, dominated by the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from the reign of Napoleon. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly ornate pieces designed to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classic furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture-making art. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, using brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards and broadly speaking, chest furniture. They also drew inspiration from mythology and antiquity, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common features in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, giving each style a unique character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.
The most important aspect of elite antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as many forgeries circulate on the market.
