Description
Pair of 18th-century gilded lantern squares with original wheel rims, made of wrought iron. This pair of antique iron wall brackets comes from a castle in the Ossola Valley, where we found them with a gold-purple finish that has been partially removed to reveal traces of their original 18th-century gilding, based on what remains.
Two hanging lantern brackets are handcrafted with elegant spiral detailing, and are in good condition consistent with 18th-century craftsmanship and wear. The only flaw is a slight twist at the bottom of one of the two brackets.
Notably, the presence of a candle holder blade near the top of the square.
Stylish antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing appreciation for high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, during which the Biedermeier style was dominant. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from the reign of Napoleon. It features significant influence from Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly shaped pearl—was characterized by very ornate, statement pieces designed to radiate splendor and luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style also played a significant role. Flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, it left a major mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, often using dark stains, moldings, strong bases, and relief decorations. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common features in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such pieces, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture styles varied by country, each with its own character. This is especially relevant when seeking an elegant antique piece suited to your interior.
The key to stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with counterfeits. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the authenticity of each item, matching its description and photos. We also have access to art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
