Description
Carpet by designers Lanzavecchia + Wai
Being a designer means simultaneously being researchers, engineers, craftsmen, and storytellers.
.
Wai is from Singapore, located in Southeast Asia, where he studied industrial design at the National University, and Lanzavecchia earned a bachelor's degree in product design from Politecnico di Milano in Italy. They began collaborating at Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, where both completed their Masters in Design under the guidance of Gijs Bakkers, co-founder of Droog Design.
Lanzavecchia's main interests are the relationships between objects and the human body and soul, as well as a passionate outlook on future trends. Wai is fascinated by clashes and fusions of materials, meanings, and forms.
Their collaboration is based on these goals and, coming from two very different countries and cultures, they seek to draw on each other's experiences, knowledge, and skills to stimulate lateral thinking and agile, tangible applications.
Design projects are for them research journeys characterized by the search for and selective use of various design disciplines and professional skills, which are to be curated, crossed, and nurtured into concepts and products that offer possibilities and inspire new perspectives.
Lanzavecchia + Wai have jointly gained recognition and acclaim on major design platforms such as SaloneSatellite, Fuori Salone, and Triennale Design Museum in Milan (IT), MAXXI - National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome (IT), Depot Basel (CH), Interieur Kortrijk (BE), IMM in Cologne (DE), Tokyo Design Week (JP), and Beijing Design Week (CN).
Their work has also been represented and promoted in internationally renowned magazines such as *Wallpaper, Newsweek, FRAME, Flash Art, Form, Metropolis, ICON, DAMn, Items, etc.
Their projects include both limited editions for galleries and museums, and mass-produced products for large companies, as well as special commissions for brands such as Alcantara, Samsonite, and Mercedes Benz.
The Lanzavecchia + Wai company was officially founded at the end of 2009, during a three-month residency as part of the Time to Design - New Talent award, at Danish art workshops, to realize their inaugural collection “Spaziale Series: New Expressions of Skin and Structure”.
Among their recent achievements are being recognized by Newsweek as one of the “Designers of the Future” in June 2012 and a nomination for the Wallpaper* Design Awards 2013 - “Life-enhancer of the Year” for the MonoLight table lamp.
