Construction of Versailles began in 1668. It is located near Paris and is famous for its palace complex, the residence of French kings from 1682. Versailles Palace, expanded grandly under Louis XIV, along with the garden and park complex, is the most magnificent work of French classicism and baroque architecture.
The creator of the garden and park layout was André Le Nôtre. In Versailles, the Estates-General were convened in 1789, and in 1871, the palace served as the seat of government (Versaillais), which suppressed the Paris Commune. It has hosted many international conferences, including the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919.
