How, you may ask, did such a thorny flower become the national emblem? Well, the story goes that a long time ago, when Scotland was ravaged by Vikings, a group of Scottish warriors rested for the night in a field. Unbeknownst to them, a raiding party was preparing to attack this group of Scots under the cover of darkness. As the attacking Vikings approached the camping Scots, they stepped on a patch of thistles with their bare feet and, of course, let out cries of pain as the thorns dug deep into their soles and toes. The Scots, awakened by this commotion, were able to repel the attackers. Thus, from that day, the thistle was adopted as the national emblem of Scotland.
