Well, according to history, long ago, when Scotland was ravaged by Vikings, a group of Scottish warriors was resting overnight in a field. They didn't know that a raiding party was preparing to attack them under cover of darkness. As the attacking Vikings approached the Scottish camp, they stepped barefoot onto a patch of thorns and, of course, cried out in pain as the thorns pierced deeply into their soles and toes. The Scots, awakened by this ruckus, were able to repel the attackers. Since then, the thorn has been adopted as a national symbol of Scotland.
