Well, history tells us that long ago, when Scotland was ravaged by Vikings, a group of Scottish warriors was resting overnight in a field. They didn’t know that a raiding party was preparing to attack them under cover of darkness. As the attacking Vikings approached the encamped Scots, they stepped barefoot onto a patch of brambles and, of course, cried out in pain as the thorns deeply pierced their soles and toes. Woken by this battering ram, the Scots were able to repel the attackers. Since then, the bramble has been adopted as Scotland’s national emblem.
