As Pantokrator Christ, He is depicted standing or seated on a throne, with an open Holy Bible in His left hand and His right hand raised in a blessing gesture. The finger positioning references the Greek monogram of Christ: IC XC. Two fingers are joined: the thumb and the ring finger. The index finger and the bent middle finger form the letters IC. The crossed thumb and ring finger, combined with the little finger, form XC. This is not the only interpretation of the gesture, according to some theologians, the connected thumb and ring finger symbolize the duality of Christ's nature: divine and human. Meanwhile, the connection of three fingers — the little finger, ring finger, and thumb — symbolizes the Holy Trinity.
The book that Jesus holds in His left hand refers to His mission of teaching. It usually contains a quote from the Gospel of John: "Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment".
In the Orthodox tradition, depicting Christ as Pantokrator is most often placed on the ceiling of the central dome of a church. This tradition, dating back to the 11th century, has symbolic significance. During the Macedonian Dynasty (867-1056), when iconoclasm ended, Byzantine church art was revived. Even then, Christian temples began to be built with the concept of creating a "cosmic image." Placing the Pantokrator icon on the central ceiling was meant to show Christ, who looks down from above upon His world.
