The complex social structures of their lives are thrown into chaos with the arrival of May’s cousin, Countess Ellen Oleńska, in their gilded circle. Ellen, recently separated from her libertine Polish Count husband, is everything May is not—carefree, unconventional, artistic—and Archer falls hopelessly in love with her. Torn between his passion for Ellen and his duty to May, Archer must choose between the women, a decision that will determine the rest of their lives.
