The Age of Innocence (winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1921) is a story of desire and betrayal, set in the golden age of the 1920s in New York. It tells the story of Newland Archer, a wealthy lawyer from an aristocratic family, happily engaged in society with the beautiful May Welland. The complex social structures of their lives are thrown into chaos with the arrival of May’s cousin, Countess Ellen Oleńska, in their gilded circle. Ellen, recently separated from her libertine Polish Count husband, is everything May is not—carefree, unconventional, artistic—and Archer falls hopelessly in love with her. Torn between his passion for Ellen and his duty to May, Archer must choose between the women, a decision that will determine the rest of their lives.
The FLAME TREE CLASSICS collection was chosen to create a stunning and timeless home library.
