First published in The Sketch Book in 1819-20, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow tells the story of teacher Ichabod Crane, who lives in Sleepy Hollow, a Dutch settlement near the Hudson River. It is a place full of local superstitions, including one about the Headless Horseman. Crane's attention is drawn to Katrina van Tassel, the daughter of a wealthy farmer, and he begins to court her. Such behavior provokes the anger of another suitor, Brom Bones, a well-known local joker. At a party, Crane confesses his love for Katrina, who rejects him. On his way home, he encounters the “horseman,” who throws his head at the Gull. Ichabod Crane is never heard from again. The only traces left behind are the horse, saddle, hat, and a mysterious smashed pumpkin. What happened that night to Ichabod Crane, and who was the Headless Horseman?
