Description
Pair of lacquered and gilded wooden palms with handles made of wrought and gilded iron, resting on a distinctive square ivory-colored lacquered base, which supports a turned and carved vase with ribs and veins. The finish was achieved by alternating ivory-colored lacquer and delicate gold gilding on a red background. At the top, there was probably a large, round recess housing a metal flower vase. The two iron handles feature coils at the top and charming curls at the bottom. The condition is good, consistent with a date from the late 1700s. They originate from northern Italy.
Palms are flower vases that were placed on altars as decorations; they often have a shallower depth and are unadorned at the back because they are positioned against walls in side altars. The main altars, however, feature them in a circular form. Various materials were used, mainly wood, copper or brass sheet metal, stamped or transformed into tiles, but also cast bronze. Palms, as symbols of Christian victory, are increasingly replaced by artificial flowers made from materials such as fabrics, sheet metal, or beads. They are perfect as interior decorations, especially as bases for lamps.
Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that have a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of traditional and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture belongs to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Stunning Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a significant resemblance to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these works.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past era. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, using dark stains, moldings, strong bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest furniture. They also reflected an interest in mythology and antiquity, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture inspired by Italian and French creators, demonstrating admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, giving each style a unique character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.
