The construction of the Taj Mahal took about 20 years and involved over 20,000 workers. Some sources state that after the completion of the building, the emperor ordered the main builder and architect to be killed so that no similar structure would be built anywhere in the world.
The structure is built from white marble, and its surfaces are covered with thousands of gemstones, semi-precious stones, and calligraphic decorations made from black marble.
