Monarch of the Glen is an oil painting on canvas depicting a noble stag, painted in 1851 by the English painter Sir Edwin Landseer.
It was one of the most popular paintings of the 19th century. In the mid-20th century, the painting became something of a cliché, described as “the best picture of Scotland on a cookie tin: a majestic stag against a backdrop of purple hills and a misty sky of solitary wilderness.”
Apparently, the painting was created in Glen Affric and is now housed in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
