Replica of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Coupé, 1955, for the automotive fan

The so-called “Uhlenhaut Coupé” is one of the icons in Mercedes-Benz history. Only two units were built, officially as racing prototypes. The technology of the racing sports car 300 SLR with an open roof is hidden beneath an elegant body; the coupé was intended for racing as a closed version. Since Mercedes-Benz ended its racing involvement after the 1955 season, it was no longer used.

Although the 300 SLR coupés were no longer used in actual races, chassis 0007/55 was no stranger to motorsport. It was used by the factory racing team as a test car during the Swedish Grand Prix in June 1955 and the RAC Tourist Trophy in September. During the Targa Florio, the final round of the 1955 sports car world championship, intensive testing was carried out over a total distance of 16,695 kilometers to familiarize with the 72-kilometer circuit and its 900 turns. The Mercedes team was no exception – Stirling Moss continuously trained behind the wheel of chassis 0007/55. He damaged the front right part of the car; the frame was deformed in that area, and the wishbones were bent. But this did not stop him and Fangio from achieving a double victory with their SLRs at the Targa Florio on October 16, 1955.
