When Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the father of the racing 300 SLR, went to the Mille Miglia in 1955 to witness Mercedes' success up close, he also thought about equipping the racing 300 SLR with a closed cockpit for long-distance racing. His ideas were realized in the form of a high-performance coupé with capabilities unmatched by any other sports car on the road. During a test on a closed section of highway near Munich, the two-seater vehicle reached a speed of 290 km/h.
