Description
18th-century Italian Madonna with Child, Roman school, oil on copper religious painting attributed to Girolamo Pesci (1684-1759), dated to the early 18th century, set in a modern carved and gilded frame.
Good condition, originating from a private collection in Milan, and the owner provided us with an expert opinion issued by a Venetian antique gallery at the time of purchase.
The painting resembles devotional works in the style of Maratta, but in this case, the style points to a follower, Francesco Trevisan, specifically to the Roman artist Girolamo Pesci (1684-1759).
Exclusive antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture dates back to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and the Victorian English style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture corresponds to the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily on ancient architecture. Notable and interesting are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly ornate, luxurious furniture meant to shine with splendor and play a significant role in opulence. Materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can observe how the Baroque style has greatly influenced modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style is also significant, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries and leaving a profound mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, often using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These pieces were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common features in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture inspired by Italian and French artisans, reflecting admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, and each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.
The most crucial aspect of authentic antique furniture is its originality. Ultimately, this is vital for buyers, as many forgeries circulate on the market. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the product’s authenticity and compliance with the description and photographs. We also have access to art experts, historians, and specialists from around the world.
