SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Teak has always been the preferred raw material for creating garden furniture, thanks to its exceptional durability and weather resistance. Unopiù uses the highest quality “A-grade” teak wood, fully compliant with eco-sustainable procedures. The high-quality materials used ensure that Unopiù products are a durable choice, built for long-term use.

Teak is probably the most environmentally friendly raw material used in the garden furniture industry: not only is it recyclable, but it is also truly renewable. Just plant a seed in the ground, and nature takes care of everything. As teak trees grow, they also convert planetary carbon dioxide into valuable oxygen.

Unopiù sources teak wood from Indonesia, home to the largest and oldest certified teak plantations in the world: owned by the Indonesian government, these plantations are a major source of employment in the country. Teak is cultivated like any other crop: harvesting and replanting are carried out sustainably so that these plantations, established in the late 19th century, remain a renewable source of income for future generations.

THE TREE

Environmental and nature protection for the brand begins not only with using certified plantation teak wood but also with creating reforestation projects in collaboration with Treedom. A clear vision of a specific plan enabled the planting of 300 cocoa trees in Cameroon in 2020. In the future, Unopiù will continue to care for the environment and undertake concrete actions through new reforestation projects worldwide: a small but solid contribution to reducing CO2 emissions and promoting the strengthening of local economies.

Iroko, which adorns the Salento collection, is a wood so resistant to water and moisture that it has earned the nickname “fat wood.” It is an excellent material both for its beauty and its hydrophobic properties, making it perfect for furniture intended for gardens, terraces, and balconies.

But wood also inspires creativity. The Wood Skin process transforms wood fibers into sheets that bend, curve, and adapt to the most capricious shapes, like origami. This technology allows rigid materials to bend through digital milling and hinges, giving them a three-dimensional form. The process is reversible. The lightness of aluminum embodies the spirit of Unopiù’s most minimalist collections, such as Tline and Shibuya. Hand-woven polyolefin rope is one of Unopiù’s signature features: a material that has characterized its production for years, resistant to outdoor use, eco-friendly, and distinguished by a natural appearance that sets it apart from all other synthetic fibers. Unopiù synthetic rope combines the softness and tactile pleasure of delicate natural fabrics with the durability of advanced technological materials, as demonstrated by the success of the Luce collection.

WaProLace synthetic fiber is an exclusive Unopiù patent and characterizes some of its most popular lines, such as Capri and Agorà. This next-generation synthetic material is unbeatable against all outdoor hazards: sun, rain, salty air, as well as chlorine and sunscreen filters from afternoon poolside, and even mold, bacteria, and fungi that affect appearance and structure. Moreover, WaProLace reflects Unopiù’s ecological awareness: it is biodegradable and recyclable. Not to mention its aesthetic aspect: this attractive fiber is not only beautiful but also pleasant to the touch, anti-static, and easy to clean.

The skin is the most distinctive element of the historic Chelsea collection and its armchairs. The one used by Unopiù is handcrafted according to ancient traditional Tuscan vegetable tanning techniques, which use tree tannins in an environmentally friendly way. This process transforms raw hides into environmentally respectful leather, giving the final product unique nuances.

Garden cushion fabric: fifty shades

Within the Color collection, thirteen colors are available off the shelf. Among them, three belong to the Outdoor Acrylic family in diamond, milk, and hazelnut shades. These highly technical, top-quality fabrics are specially designed and created for outdoor use; the dyeing process ends with an innovative finishing treatment. This technique ensures that fabric colors remain unchanged over time, resistant to organic factors such as mold and fungi, as well as weather conditions like UV rays. Moreover, comfort is not forgotten: Outdoor Acryl fabrics are breathable and pleasant to the touch.

The remaining ten colors of the Color collection belong to the Waterproof family. This innovative fabric features a clever blend of polypropylene and polyester. Modernity, yet also the softness of nature, thanks to the soft feel of the fabric; the checkered texture enhances this natural vibe and adds extra elegance.

Waterproof fabrics are completely impermeable to all liquids. If needed, cushions covered with waterproof fabric can be easily washed by hand or in a washing machine: quick wash, even quicker drying, and the fabric will be as good as new.

Unopiù’s new Velluto fabrics are an exceptional line born from Fischbacher’s research into plastic recycling. This noble and top-tier on-demand collection of cushions for sofas, armchairs, and beds offers 7 color variants, all with extraordinary elegance and refinement. Truly velvet to the touch, warm, delicate, and very soft, yet in reality, 70% of the yarn used comes from recycled PET bottles. The result is a high-quality ecological product, resistant to external factors and light, fire-retardant, and suitable for all environments, indoors and outdoors, public and private.
