The painting is inspired by the work of Abraham Van Beyeren, a Dutch Baroque painter and one of the most outstanding still life artists. The composition of the current artwork can be characterized as a simpler version of a banquet or Pronkstilleven, which flourished in Antwerp in the 1840s. In this “pronkstilleven” (Dutch for “lavish still life”), De Robertis depicts a vast array of luxurious objects, such as a silver cup and tray, Venetian glass, shrimp, and various types of fruit. All of this is an expression of wealth as well as a demonstration of the artist’s painterly virtuosity.
