His artistic activity is associated with Bologna (1494–1495), Florence (1501–1505, 1517–1534), and primarily Rome (1496–1501, 1505–1517, 1534–1564), where the artist's work was under papal patronage. Trained in the workshop of Florentine painter Domenico Ghirlandaio, and in sculpture in the workshop of Bertoldo di Giovanni.
