Description

Mercedes displayed four W125 racing cars at the 1937 Donington Grand Prix. Richard “Dick” Seaman started with the race number 4. However, his hopes were dashed on lap 4 when Auto Union driver H.P. Müller hit the rear of Seaman’s W125. Despite damage to the rear end, gearbox, and rear suspension, Seaman continued to race relentlessly with significant limitations. Ultimately, on lap 30, he had to withdraw from the race in bitter disappointment. CMC recreated Seaman’s car almost identical to the original.

The Donington Grand Prix in England took place on October 2nd, marking the final race of the 1937 season and the last round of the 750 kg formula races. Although it was not part of the European Championship Grand Prix, it was the first time the Grand Prix scene came to Great Britain and an opportunity to witness spectacular performances by racing giants.

Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union were deeply involved in the main Grand Prix competitions, so a duel between them was anticipated, especially after reports that both teams sent their top drivers to the UK, such as Rudolf Caracciola for Mercedes-Benz and Bernd Rosemeyer for Auto Union. For safety reasons, race organizers also decided that all participating cars would be equipped with an additional leather strap to keep the engine cover securely closed, giving each racing car a very distinctive appearance.

The race was a relentless showdown between young Bernd Rosemeyer in the Auto Union Type C and Manfred von Brauchitsch in his Mercedes W125 with an 8-cylinder supercharged engine producing 570 HP. Rosemeyer ultimately won, with von Brauchitsch finishing second and Caracciola third. The other two Mercedes drivers, Hermann Lang and Richard Seaman, a native Brit and local hero, were less fortunate. Both had to retire due to technical issues or accidents.

Overall, Mercedes would have been satisfied with second and third places. The W125 proved to be the most successful Grand Prix car of the season, and Rudolf Caracciola was crowned the European Champion in 1937.
