“Carrera Panamericana”, the famous Mexican endurance car race, took place for the third time from November 19 to 25, 1952. Although Mercedes-Benz was the first participant, it achieved a double victory in this race. The championship went to Karl Kling, with starting number 4.
The 1952 “Carrera Panamericana” was the biggest adventure of the year for the Mercedes-Benz racing division, whose entries in this race elevated its long and successful history to a new level. Consisting of four cars and a large crew led by “Alfred Neubauer”, the Mercedes-Benz team flew to Mexico in November 1952. The 300SL was powered by a newly developed 3.1-liter engine with a maximum output of 177 HP. The race, which lasted five days and covered over 3,000 km, was very dramatic. When it finally ended, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL not only set a new track record but also achieved a double victory.
This model is an exact replica of Karl Kling’s winning car with starting number 4. Additional features include a green diamond logo on the front fenders and eight pieces of metal strip in front of the windshield. During test drives earlier, a collision with a vulture shattered its windshield. The windshield has been reinstalled with reinforcement made of metal rods in case of a second accident.
