Well, history tells us that long ago, when Scotland was ravaged by Vikings, a group of Scottish warriors was resting overnight in a field. They didn't know that a raiding party was preparing to attack them under cover of darkness. As the attacking Vikings approached the encamped Scots, they stood barefoot on a patch of nettles and, of course, cried out in pain as the thorns pierced deeply into their soles and toes. Woken by this assault, the Scots were able to repel the attackers. Since then, the nettle has been adopted as Scotland’s national emblem.
