As you might ask, how did the thistle flower become a national emblem? Well, history tells us that a long time ago, when Scotland was ravaged by Vikings, a group of Scottish warriors was resting overnight in a field. They didn't know that a raiding party was preparing to attack them under cover of darkness. As the attacking Vikings approached the encampment, they stepped barefoot onto a patch of thistles and, of course, cried out in pain as the thorns pierced deeply into their soles and toes. The Scots, awakened by this ramming, were able to repel the attackers. Since then, the thistle has been adopted as Scotland’s national emblem.
