Yves Saint Laurent - designer - visionary who revolutionized the world of exclusive fashion

Yves Saint Laurent is not just a designer, he is above all a visionary who revolutionized the world of women's fashion. He was born in Oran, Algeria, in the second half of the 1930s. He studied there until the age of 17. He then left his country to fulfill his creative dreams in Paris. The start of this fashion genius can be considered very successful as he had the opportunity to showcase his creativity. This was aided by his meeting with Christian Dior, thanks to whom he became the chief designer. He immediately got to work, and his first collections became a global hit. When Dior passed away in 1957, Yves took the helm of his brand, preventing the bankruptcy of the Dior Fashion House. Four years later, the visionary left his current world and decided to establish his own enterprise. 

Yves Saint Laurent not only designed, he revolutionized the perception of the female silhouette. He did not follow modern trends but drew inspiration from various oriental cultures. He combined classic elements with those of the contemporary world, while expressing emotions and artistic explorations in his clothing. He believed that fashion is a dialogue, a respect for women, and a way to showcase their inner strength and independence.

Brand history

After ending his collaboration with the Dior brand, Yves Saint Laurent, along with his partner Pierre Bergé, founded his own brand in 1961, bearing his name. The first YSL collection he presented to the world was immediately met with great acclaim. A breakthrough moment for the brand was the creation of the Mordian collection, which combined art with fashion. Subsequent successes included the introduction of:

  • The prêt-à-porter concept,
  • fashion for tweed jackets,
  • women's tuxedos.

After clothing, it was time to design high boots, handbags, and other accessories, until in 1971, the business expanded to include the production of the first perfumes. 

In 1993, due to financial reasons, the brand was acquired by the Sanofi corporation, and six years later it was taken over by Gucci, at which time Tom Ford became the designer for YSL. In 2002, Yves Saint Laurent retired. He passed away in 2008. Among those who attended his funeral were the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, with his wife, and fashion designers Christian Lacroix and Jean-Paul Gaultier.
