The History of the Dior Brand
Ambition and Passion
Christian Dior was born in Granville, a seaside town on the Normandy coast. His parents wanted him to become a diplomat, but he was much more interested in art. With financial support from his father, he opened a small art gallery, which unfortunately failed due to the Great Depression. It was then that the story began, leading to the creation of today's fashion empire.
In 1937, Dior was hired by the renowned fashion designer Robert Piguet. He remembered this collaboration fondly, saying: “Robert Piguet taught me the value of simplicity, which leads to true elegance.”
He then became a junior designer at the fashion house of Lucien Lelong, until in 1946, Marcel Boussac, an industrial tycoon and then the richest man in France, invited Dior to design for the Parisian fashion house Philippe et Gaston.
Christian Dior - A Revolutionary in the Fashion World
The young designer, however, had his own vision. Driven by the desire to start a business under his own name, he refused and also in 1946, founded his own fashion house. It quickly became apparent that Dior's creations sparked much controversy due to their new style and departure from existing fashion.
It must be said, Christian Dior was a master at shaping forms and accentuating silhouettes; his designs were mainly made from percale to outline the figures of models, using padding on the hips, fitted corsets, and petticoats.
The Dior Fashion House - From Hatred to Admiration
Initially, many women opposed Dior's skirt designs. It was the 1950s, dresses still covered the legs, but a fashion revolution was just around the corner. At that time, Coco Chanel also stood in opposition to the Dior fashion house, creating more practical and elegant clothing.
She sharply criticized the aesthetics presented by Christian Dior, because, as she claimed - he brought back uncomfortable and impractical dresses to women's wardrobes, created for the needs of a “salon” lady, not a professionally active woman.
Despite such negative reception of the brand, the accusations soon proved unfounded, and the “New Look” created by Dior eventually revolutionized women's dresses and cemented Paris's position as the fashion capital of the world after World War II.
Unfortunately, in 1957, the famous founder of the brand died while on vacation in Montecatini, Italy, likely from a heart attack. Nevertheless, he managed to elevate Dior to great heights, and subsequent creative directors, including Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Raf Simons, and since 2016 Maria Grazia Chiuri, have managed to uphold his proud name, and to this day, the Dior fashion house enjoys an unwavering reputation.
