In 18th-century Scotland, Tappit Hen with mulled claret wine was taken from inns for stagecoach passengers to warm and nourish them outside the wagon. The claret was then poured into a small pewter cup or “Tassie” for drinking. The Tassie was designed to fit inside the neck of the measure when empty, and sometimes you can find a Tappit Hen still with its Tassie in place. The earliest known Tappit Hen bears a touch mark of Edinburgh Castle, dating back to 1669.
