Description

Large antique crystal chandelier from the mid-19th century with eighteen lights in Louis XVI style, from a villa by Lake Como. Impressive bronze structure with a rectangular cross-section and a central truss support made of ribbed Czech crystal.

The tall construction of this period chandelier, entirely handcrafted for wax candle lighting, features eighteen curved double arms, twelve plus six, arranged in two rows; originally, serving as the main light source, the two-row arrangement ensured even light dispersion.

The arms are richly decorated with numerous rosettes, drops, and fan-shaped pendants in faceted crystal, as well as elegant obelisks also in crystal. Each arm ends with a multi-petal colacera plate in the shape of flowers and long candles set in E14 holders.

Each of the eighteen handcrafted arms is stamped and numbered, with the corresponding number engraved. A large faceted ball finishes the lower part of the chandelier.

It originates from the hallway of a villa by Lake Como and is in excellent condition after conservative restoration, which, through careful cleaning, revealed the structure; it has been rewired for a maximum total power of 1500 watts. The bronze structure has been treated to prevent oxidation and darkening over time.

This masterpiece of Italian art and lighting, born in the 19th century to illuminate festive rooms, combines the refinement of discreet elegance with the precious and scenographic effect of crystal, and for a fascinating alchemy, it finds a very current place in modern interiors.

The gallery photos document the chandelier before restoration. The height of 150 cm does not include the chain; it refers only to the chandelier itself.

Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing appreciation for high-quality vintage items that have a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture from the 19th century, including the beloved Biedermeier style. Early in the century, this includes neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolve into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

Empire-style furniture dates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly ornate pieces designed to exude splendor and play a significant role in luxury. They used exclusive materials selectively to emphasize their grandeur.

Today, we can see how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, with moldings, strong bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as in the construction of cabinets and broadly speaking, chest furniture. They also drew inspiration from mythology and ancient times, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion's paws, eagle's heads – these are common motifs especially in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands recreate furniture made in this style, drawing inspiration from Italian and French artisans. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that each country perceived furniture craftsmanship differently, so each style in a given nation had its own distinct character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.

The most important aspect of prestigious antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is what matters to the buyer, as the market is flooded with many forgeries.
