Description

Large antique crystal chandelier from the mid-19th century with eighteen lights in Louis XVI style, from a villa by Lake Como. Impressive bronze structure with a rectangular cross-section and a central truss support made of ribbed Czech crystal.

The tall construction of this period chandelier, entirely handcrafted for wax candle lighting, features eighteen curved double arms, twelve plus six, arranged in two rows; originally, as the main light source, the two-row arrangement ensured even light dispersion.

The arms are richly decorated with numerous rosettes, drops, and chandelier pendants in the shape of fans, faceted crystal, and elegant obelisks also in crystal. Each arm ends with a multi-petal colacera plate in the shape of flowers and long candles set in E14 holders.

Each of the eighteen handcrafted arms is stamped and numbered, with the corresponding number engraved. A large faceted ball finishes the lower part of the chandelier.

It comes from the hallway of a villa by Lake Como and is in excellent condition after conservative restoration, which, through careful cleaning, revealed the structure; it has been re-electrified to a maximum total power of 1500 watts. The bronze structure has been treated to prevent oxidation and darkening over time.

This masterpiece of Italian art and lighting, born in the 19th century to illuminate festive rooms, combines the refinement of discreet elegance with the precious and scenographic effect of crystal, and for a fascinating alchemy, it finds a very contemporary place within interior design.

The gallery photos document the chandelier before restoration. Height 150 cm does not include the chain; it refers only to the chandelier itself.

Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that have a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture from the 19th century includes the beloved Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, heavily inspired by Roman and Greek decorative motifs.

Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws strongly from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these items.

Today, we can see how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past era. An important style is also Renaissance, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, which left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards and broadly speaking, chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion's paws, eagle's heads – these are common sights in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture crafted in this style, drawing inspiration from Italian and French artisans. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that each country perceived furniture making differently, so each style in a given nation had its own distinct character. This is especially important when searching for the perfect exclusive antique for your interior.

The most important aspect of prestigious antique furniture is originality. And this ultimately matters to the buyer, as the market is filled with many forgeries.
