Description

Landscape with a resting shepherd, sheep, and cow, Tschaggeny 1849, signed and dated in the lower right corner by the Flemish Romantic painter and engraver Charles Philogene Tschaggeny, Brussels 1815-1894.

This antique oil painting on oak panel, set in a modern carved gilded wooden frame, depicts a resting shepherd sitting in the shade of a tree, petting a cow. In front of them sits a sheep with a lamb. The scene in the foreground is surrounded by a rural landscape with architecture in the background.

In excellent condition, mounted in a carved and gilded wooden frame, this antique Belgian painting comes from a private collection in Milan.

Charles Philogene Tschaggeny studied under the renowned painter Eugene Verboeckhoven, then in 1836 moved to Antwerp, where he worked with Nicaise de Keyzer and Henri Leys.

Tschaggeny mainly painted horses, studying their anatomy in detail. He was considered one of the best horse painters of his time. Active as a Romantic Animalier painter and engraver in the Netherlands, where he won a gold medal at the Brussels Salon in 1845 and in 1846 at the Antwerp Salon, as well as in England, where he moved in 1848-1849.

His patrons included Dutch King William II, Leopold I of Belgium, and Maria Henrietta of Austria. Also, Queen Victoria of England, a great admirer of his work, purchased the painting for her collection in 1851.

In 1865, Tschaggeny became a member of the Royal Academy.

His works can be found at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels and The National Gallery in London.

Stylish antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that possess character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.

Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from Napoleon’s reign. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, such as Louis XVI style, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, which derives from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces designed to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these items.

Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classic furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, using brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets and broadly speaking, chest furniture. They also reflected an interest in mythology and antiquity, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion paws and eagle heads are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global companies reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French artisans. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, and each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.

The most important aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial from the buyer's perspective, as many counterfeits circulate on the market.
