Description

Lancia had a reputation as a company offering cutting-edge innovations, not only in its motorsport activities but also in its road car models. In a way, the D50 was a borderline case, as Gianni Lancia allowed Vittorio Jano to design the first racing car in Formula 1 history from Lancia. The revolutionary and state-of-the-art D50 project promised well for its pursuit of honor and fame. However, after the tragic loss of Ascari, Gianni Lancia distanced himself from motorsport for a long time.

The D50 project was a masterpiece by Vittorio Jano, featuring revolutionary innovations to cope with the new rules imposed on Grand Prix racing. Among its distinctive features was a gearbox that significantly lowered the center of gravity, a lightweight compact V8 engine with a 90° cylinder angle and four camshafts in the cylinder head, and aerodynamically shaped fuel tanks in panniers. To bypass the driveshaft, which rotated in accordance with the crankshaft, the engine was tilted 12° to the left from the longitudinal axis. The gearbox was mounted transversely just in front of the de Dion rear axle. These groundbreaking features made the D50 unique.

The ambitious Lancia Formula 1 project quickly attracted the attention of major players in the racing world. Alberto Ascari, a two-time world champion from earlier years, signed a contract with Lancia. The Lancia team also welcomed another outstanding driver, Luigi Villoresi. In 1955, more renowned pilots, including Eugenio Castellotti, joined the team.

On October 24, 1954, the Lancia D50 debuted at the final race of the season – the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. Alberto Ascari secured pole position in qualifying and set the fastest lap of the race with 2:18 minutes, but a clutch failure forced him to retire on the 9th of 80 laps. The revolutionary spirit started brilliantly but suddenly ended – at least for that season.

No other Lancia car has ever caused such emotional excitement among competitors and spectators, not to mention its lasting impact on the company's fate. Following Alberto Ascari's death shortly thereafter, the costs of developing the D50 and pursuing victories in prestigious Grand Prix races proved too great for Gianni Lancia.

The racing team along with the D50 fleet was handed over to Enzo Ferrari in 1955, and Lancia's motorsport activities were halted for nearly a decade.
