Description

Inlaid desk clock housed in ebonized pearwood and rosewood case with geometric ivory inlays, zinc, and brass accents. The watch case has been cleaned and polished with shellac. The mechanism is operational and bears the signature F. Kunz in Wien. The clock originates from Austria, specifically Vienna, and dates back to the first half of the 19th century.

As highlighted in the photo gallery, showing the clock case before restoration, the missing zinc inserts have been recreated and hand-perforated to match the original pieces.

It is in perfect condition, with restorations on the dial and inserts.

Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few stand out as particularly important. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Early in that century, it was followed by neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe, and finally the Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque influences.

Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. It was inspired by Napoleon’s reign, characterized by strong references to Roman and Greek decorative motifs.

Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Notable and interesting are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly ornate, luxurious furniture designed to impress with splendor and play a significant role in opulence. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.

Today, we can see how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which often echoes the grandeur of the past. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, often using dark stains, moldings, strong bases, and relief decorations. These pieces were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and other chest-type furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms—lions’ paws, eagles’ heads being common motifs.

In Renaissance style, you often see lion’s paws and eagle heads. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture styles varied by country, each with its own character. This is especially relevant when searching for a unique, exclusive antique piece suited to your interior.

The key to stylish antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with counterfeits. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the authenticity of each item, matching the description and photos. We also have access to art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
