Originally, the horse was most often regarded as a chthonic being, associated with fire and water as life-giving but also dangerous forces, so in many regions of Europe and also in the Far East, it was believed that its hooves could cause water springs to erupt from the ground.

It is also frequently associated with the lunar realm. It remained close to the realm of death (e.g., in Central Asia and among many Indo-European peoples), and was also seen as a guide for souls; therefore, it was sometimes buried with the deceased or offered as a sacrifice in connection with someone's death. The negative symbolism of the horse appears, for example, in Zoroastrianism, where the enemy — Ahriman — is often depicted as a horse.

As a symbol of youth, strength, sex, and masculinity, the horse represents both the dark and light sides of the aforementioned symbolism. The horse is also a zodiac sign in Chinese astrology and corresponds to Libra.
