Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, Russian: Смоленская икона Божией Матери, Smolenskaja Ikona Božiej Matieri – one of the most venerated icons of the Orthodox Church. It belongs to the Hodegetria iconographic type with Christ. The Child holds a rolled scroll in his left hand, and blesses with his right hand.
According to legend, the original was created by Luke the Evangelist. This image was brought to Rus' from Byzantium by a Byzantine princess (Anna?) in 1046. She was the daughter of Constantine IX Monomachos and came to Rus' to marry Prince Vsevolod. Vsevolod Monomach, son and successor of the princely pair, as a prince of Smolensk, donated the icon to the Smolensk Assumption Cathedral in 1079. Soon after, the icon was considered miraculous. It may have been around this time that it began to be called the Smolensk Icon. The image brought by the Byzantine princess has not survived.
In 1398, the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God was transferred to Moscow, which helped spread its veneration to larger areas. It remained in Moscow until 1456, after which it was returned to Smolensk.
