Smolensk Mother of God Icon, Russian: Смоленская икона Божией Матери, Smolenskaja Ikona Božiej Matieri – one of the most venerated icons of the Orthodox Church. It belongs to the Hodegetria iconographic type with Christ. The Child holds a rolled scroll in his left hand and blesses with his right hand.
According to legend, the original was created by Luke the Evangelist. This image was brought to Rus' from Byzantium by a Byzantine princess (Anna?) in 1046. She was the daughter of Constantine IX Monomachos and came to Rus' to marry Prince Vsevolod. Władysław Monomach, son and successor of the princely pair, as a prince of Smolensk, donated the icon in 1079 to the Smolensk Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Soon after, the icon was recognized as miraculous. It may have been around this time that it began to be called the Smolensk Icon. The image brought by the Byzantine princess has not survived.
In 1398, the Smolensk Mother of God Icon was transferred to Moscow, which helped spread its veneration over a larger area. It remained in Moscow until 1456, after which it was returned to Smolensk.
