Paul of Tarsus, Apostle Paul, Saul, Sawa, Shaul, Hebrew: שאול התרסי Szaul ha-Tarsi (born circa 5-10 in Tarsus, Cilicia, died 64-67 in Rome) – a Jewish man from Tarsus, Christian saint, known as Apostle to the Nations. This saint is mentioned in the Eucharistic Prayer of the Roman Canon.
Educated as a Pharisee in Jerusalem; initially a persecutor of Christians. Under the influence of an event on the way to Damascus around 35/36 AD, he converted and was baptized. After a short stay in Arabia, he began his activity in Damascus. Later, after visiting the leaders of the Jewish community in Jerusalem, he returned to his native Cilicia. Through Barnabas, he worked in Antioch.
He undertook three missionary journeys. During the first (around 45-49), he visited Cyprus and the central part of Asia Minor. After returning, he participated in the Jerusalem council, where the issue of accepting Gentile converts into Christianity and the observance of the Mosaic Law was decided. During his second missionary journey (50-52), he worked in Asia Minor, Macedonia, and Greece; during the third journey (53-58), his main area of activity was Ephesus.
Arrested in Jerusalem in 58 AD, he spent two years in prison in Caesarea. During his trial, as a Roman citizen, he appealed to the emperor. He set out for Rome in the fall of 60 AD. After a three-month stay in Malta, he reached the imperial capital, where he remained under house arrest until 63 AD.
