Paul of Tarsus, Apostle Paul, Saul, Saul, Shaul, Heb. שאול התרסי Shaul ha-Tarsi (born around 5-10 in Tarsus in Cilicia, died 64-67 in Rome) – a Jew from Tarsus, a Christian saint, called the Apostle of the Nations. This saint is mentioned in the Eucharistic Prayer of the Roman Canon.
Educated in Jerusalem as a Pharisee; initially a persecutor of Christians. Under the influence of an event on the road to Damascus around 35/36, he converted and was baptized. After a short stay in Arabia, he began his work in Damascus. Later, after visiting the leaders of the community in Jerusalem, he returned to his native Cilicia. Through Barnabas, he worked in Antioch.
He undertook three missionary journeys. During the first (around 45-49), he visited Cyprus and the central part of Asia Minor. Upon his return, he participated in the Jerusalem Council, where the issue of Christians of pagan origin adopting the Mosaic Law was resolved. During the second missionary journey (50-52), he worked in Asia Minor, Macedonia, and Greece, with Ephesus being the main area of activity during the third journey (53-58).
Arrested in Jerusalem in 58, he spent two years in prison in Caesarea. During the trial, as a Roman citizen, he appealed to the emperor. He set out for Rome in the autumn of 60. After a three-month stay in Malta, he reached the capital of the Empire, where he remained under house arrest until 63.
