Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, ros. Смоленская икона Божией Матери, Smolenskaja Ikona Bożyjej Matieri – one of the most venerated icons in Eastern Orthodoxy. It belongs to the Hodegetria iconographic type with Christ. The Child holds a rolled scroll in the left hand, and blesses with the right hand.
According to legend, the original was created by Luke the Evangelist. This image was brought to Rus' from Byzantium by a Byzantine princess (Anna?) in 1046. She was the daughter of Constantine IX Monomachos and came to Rus' to marry Prince Vsevolod. Vladimir Monomakh, son and successor of the princely pair, while still a prince of Smolensk, donated the icon in 1079 to the Smolensk Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Soon after, the icon was considered miraculous. It may have been at that time that it began to be called the Smolensk Icon. The image brought by the Byzantine princess has not survived.
In 1398, the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God was transferred to Moscow, which helped spread its veneration over larger areas. It remained in Moscow until 1456, after which it was returned to Smolensk.
