He was born in Lyon into an aristocratic family as the son of Count Jean de Saint-Exupéry. When he was 4 years old, his father passed away, and Antoine moved with his mother and siblings to a castle at his aunt's. He was educated in Catholic schools run by Jesuits. At age 12, he took his first airplane flight as a passenger; at the same time, he modified his bicycle by adding wings.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's aviation experiences are reflected in his works. His first story, L'Aviateur (The Aviator), was published in 1926, and in 1928 he released the book Courrier Sud (South Mail). In 1931, he wrote Nuit de Vol (Night Flight), and in 1939, Terre des Hommes (Wind, Sand and Stars), for which he received the Grand Prix of the French Academy.
